Troubleshooting High-Speed Cup Forming: Eliminating Bottom Knurling Leaks and Rim Distortion

Blaming bottom knurling leaks on mechanical pressure is usually wrong. In high-speed cup forming, temperature calibration and paperboard moisture equilibrium dictate structural integrity far more than brute mechanical force.

When converting high-speed cup forming stock, subtle shifts in environmental humidity alter the GSM paperboard rating behavior. If the board drops below optimal moisture levels, heat transfer becomes erratic during the knurling stage. The result? Weak bottom seals and unsightly rim curling defects that compromise cup rigidity. Cranking up heat elements only scorches the PE vs PLA eco-lining or aqueous barrier coating, worsening micro-fractures along the knurled fold.

The fix requires disciplined process control. Calibrate heater zone temperatures to match the specific moisture equilibrium of your FSC-certified kraft stock before increasing machine cycle speeds. Proper pre-heating relaxes the board fibers, allowing uniform rim curling and clean knurling engagement without distorting the structural lip.
